water baptism

Are you all in? Baptism by immersion is symbolic of union with Christ in his death, burial, and resurrection. Baptism is necessary for followers of Jesus since you are openly declaring that your old self, which lived independent of God’s will, is being put to death and buried, and you are now a new creation, living with Christ for Christ. 

Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life. (Romans 6:3-4)

holy spirit baptism

Have you been filled with the Holy Spirit? The first disciples were filled with the Holy Spirit at Pentecost and the sign was that people were speaking in tongues. The Holy Spirit gave them the power necessary to fulfil their ministry. We too need the Spirit for the life God is calling us into.  

And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance. (Acts 2:4)

Are you filling your mind with God’s words? The bible is necessary for knowing Jesus, maintaining your spiritual health, and knowledge of God’s will for your life. Reflecting on what we read in the bible grows us spiritually more than anything else. 

Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God. (Matthew 4:4)

prayer

Do you have a consistent prayer life? Prayer is our way of communicating with God. If we want a strong relationship with God, then prayer is something we need to be doing daily. When we pray, God moves. No matter what the challenge is, through prayer breakthrough is possible.  

But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. (Matthew 6:6)

Are you attending Church weekly? The word for Church in the bible is Ekklisía and it translates as, the called-out ones. In Acts 2 we read about the early church. They would gather daily to connect, fellowship and worship. Church today operates the same way. We are all called to be connected into a local church.  

And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another. (Hebrews 10: 24-25)

Are you connected and being discipled? In Acts 2 it says the early church, “devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers”. This is speaking of discipleship where we grow to become more like Jesus. Small Groups help people connect and grow here at Bright.  

And they devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching, to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread, and to the prayers. (Acts 2:42)

serving

Are you regularly serving? This is love, to serve one another. Everyone is called to use their gifts and talents to build God’s kingdom. We can practically do this by serving in His church. When we serve, we not only make a difference in the world, but God transforms us in the process.  

And the King will answer them, truly I say to you, as you did it to the least of these my brothers, you did it to me. (Matthew 25:40)

giving

Are you generous with your treasure? Generosity is a fruit of the spirit and flows out of a believer’s heart. It is easy in our culture to become enamored with our possessions, but the scriptures teach us the importance of giving. Giving is an act of worship and a sign of a transformed heart.  

Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously. Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. (2 Corinthians 9: 6-7)

discovering your calling

Do you know what you are called to do? A tricky question but one discovered in active pursuit of Jesus. The truth is everyone is graced and gifted by God for their unique calling. You have a purpose. If you feel stuck and unsure about what yours is, let us help you figure it out.  

Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of service, but the same Lord; and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who empowers them all in everyone. To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. (1 Corinthians 12:4-7)

evangelism

When did you last share the gospel? Evangelism is simply telling people about Jesus. This can look like sharing your testimony, explaining the scriptures, or inviting someone to church. Our primary calling as disciples is to do this very thing.  

He said to them, go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation. (Mark 16:15)

discipling

Who are you discipling? Discipling people looks like journeying with them, teaching them to obey the commands of Jesus. This is something we can overlook, fail to prioritize, or disqualify ourselves from. The truth is, if you are just a step ahead of somebody, you can help disciple them. 

Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. (Matthew 28: 19-20)

leading

How are you influencing people? John Maxwell says, ‘Leadership is influence, nothing more, nothing less.’ Since we all influence people to a degree, we all are leaders. As we grow in spiritual maturity this should correlate with stepping up our responsibility. 

Remember your leaders, who spoke the word of God to you. Consider the outcome of their way of life and imitate their faith. (Hebrews 13:7)

Are you truly living out the call on your life? After discovering our calling, we need to live it out. We will all be held accountable for how well we steward the call God gave us. Our faithfulness to this call will be rewarded in heaven.  

As a prisoner for the Lord, then, I urge you to live a life worthy of the calling you have received. (Ephesians 4:1)
